Even in the summer, our Patriots are shining in the community!
West Carteret’s own Michael McGinn, Latin teacher and gifted singer and actor, helped organize Hot Jazz once again for the American Music Festival, bringing incredible live jazz to Carteret County. This year’s performance featured the Matt Leder Quintet with Roderick “Rev” Paulin and took place Thursday, July 11 at 7 PM.
We were also treated to a special performance by rising sophomore Tommy Kellis, who took the stage and brought the house down with his blues performance. What a way to represent WCHS!
From planning major cultural events to sharing the spotlight with professional musicians, our students and faculty are out there making a difference all year long.

West Carteret is proud to announce the strong performance of our AP students this year: we gave 341 exams to 227 students (approximately 20% of our student body) and 83% of those students scored a 3 or higher!
To give this some context:
• In North Carolina public schools, about 65.4% of AP exams score a 3+, above the national average of 65%.
• WCHS students outperformed both, with an 83% success rate in all subject areas.
That excellence translates to real-world benefits: most North Carolina universities and many colleges nationwide award college credit for AP scores of 3 or higher, saving students time and money. In addition to credit, colleges look closely at course rigor in the admissions process. Taking AP classes shows you’re willing to challenge yourself, manage college-level material, and go the extra mile academically.
Next steps: Students, check AP Classroom on July 14 to learn if you qualify for an AP Scholar Award. These designations are earned based on high scores across multiple exams. It could be:
• AP Scholar – scores of 3+ on three exams
• AP Scholar with Honor or Distinction, etc.
We couldn’t be prouder of our AP students their dedication and hard work are really paying off. And hats off to our AP teachers in all subject areas who go above and beyond with training and curriculum to help students succeed. Way to go, Patriots!

Good afternoon Patriot Nation,
This is your new Principal, Justin Holt, with an important update for our school community. First, let me start by sharing my excitement for joining the team. I am keen to advance the proud traditions of excellence that make “West the Best!”
I am calling to announce a strong addition to our Administrative Team. Mikaela Worsinger has been named Assistant Principal at West Carteret. She is a graduate of West, who proceeded to earn her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Meredith College. She is presently in the process of earning her Masters in School Administration at UNC-Wilmington. Ms. Worsinger has been teaching Math at Croatan High School since 2015 and also serves as their Assistant Athletic Director. She will bring important instructional leadership skills to complement our Administrative Team and support student achievement for our Patriots.
Ms. Worsinger would like to share with the Patriot Family: “I am thrilled to officially return home to West Carteret High School as Assistant Principal. As a proud WCHS graduate, I’m excited for the opportunity to serve, collaborate, and grow with this amazing community. West Carteret has always felt like home, and I’m honored to once again be part of the tradition, excellence, and spirit that define Patriot Pride!”
I want to wish all Patriots an enjoyable Fourth of July celebration full of family and friends, truly a time to appreciate the great country and community that we are blessed to call home.

Class of 2025 graduates, don’t forget to take care of a few final steps before heading off to what’s next.
Clean out your school email and Google Drive files as soon as possible. These accounts will be disabled later this summer.
Final transcripts were sent to the colleges you listed on your senior survey today. If you took any dual enrollment classes at CCC, you’ll also need to request an official transcript from the CCC registrar to be sent directly to your college.
Congrats again, Patriots. We’re proud of you.
